Protect Bird Migration: Join Lights Out!

Birds are migrating now through November 30. When birds migrate at night, bright lights can attract and disorient them, leading to potential collisions with buildings. These collisions contribute to the serious decline in migratory bird populations. Turning off lights is a simple way to help protect migrating birds. The City of Raleigh and Wake County are turning off all nonessential lighting in their facilities between 11 pm and 6 am.

Pullen supports the Lights Out program. Thanks to the foresight of Pullenites and architects who planned the 2007–9 expansion, most lights at Pullen are dark-sky compliant; the internal lights are motion-sensored and go off after a period of time. The exceptions are the city street lights, which Pullen does not control. Three older sconces are usually on all night, but they have been turned off for now. While birds are migrating, all areas of Pullen are dark at night.

Individuals can also join the Lights Out program. Just turn off unnecessary lights outside your home, especially upward-facing lights, between 11 pm and 6 am. You can use a timer to set the on/off times. Help protect our migrating birds!
