Making Connections Through Foyers
"Foyer" is a French word meaning “hearth” or “fireside” — suggesting a group that is relaxed, receptive, and open to others. At Pullen, foyers are small gatherings of people around a simple meal. Members agree to meet at least once in each household, about once a month.
We can only learn so much about someone in passing, after a worship service, or at a church meeting. But sharing a meal together allows us to go deeper. People have often said that participating in foyers made them feel more connected in our community, and they provided opportunities to develop organic relationships of caring and mutual support.
Here are comments from the past year’s participants:
“Foyers are a great way to get to spend time with people at Pullen you’ve seen but have never gotten to know. You get to know their stories and they change into a person instead of a name or a face.”
–Jim McMahan
“Foyer 5 was a huge success! We discovered that lunch is a lovely meal to share together, had a lovely picture book read to us, ate some amazing chef-level food, and most importantly, deepened friendships through meaningful conversations and shared interests.”
–Lynn and Jim Jarrard
“I really enjoyed our group. It was a nice mix of people I knew and friends I had not met before!”
–Deb Norton
