Joys and Concerns in December

Celebrating Joys

  • Angela Wiseman, associate professor of literacy education in NC State’s College of Education, received the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers’ A.B. Herr Award. Presented annually since 1972, this award is given to a professional educator who has made outstanding contributions to and demonstrated distinguished service in the field of reading and literacy.

  • Mary Moore and Bill Gowan celebrate the engagement of their son, Max Gowan, to Amelia Covington. Amelia and Max met in their freshman year of college and have been together for 10 years!

  • Quinn Neiley’s leadership helped raise $214,000 for Note in a Pocket through Enloe High School’s Charity Ball. Note in a Pocket’s mission is to clothe children in the Triangle with dignity and love.

Praying in Loss

We remember and pray for:

  • Kristy Bastone and Kilian Baker on the death of Kristy’s mother and Kilian’s grandmother, Phyllis Bastone, who passed away on December 3.

  • Those grieving the loss of Geraldine Bryan, who passed away on December 5 at 101 years old. Geraldine was a member of Community United Church of Christ and a friend to many at Pullen.

  • The family of Hilda Highfill. Hilda — a dedicated member who embodied Pullen’s spirit of service and generosity — died on December 9 at 102 years old. A memorial service celebrating Hilda’s life will be held at Pullen on January 10 at 2 pm.

  • Our beloved Janice Siler, who passed away on December 27. Her husband, former Pullen pastor, Mahan Siler, said “she died as she had hoped…at home, peaceful and embraced by family and friends.” We pray for Mahan and the entire Siler family.

  • The family of Jim Barden, a longtime Pullen member and dedicated foyer participant. Jim died on December 26, surrounded by family members.  A graveside service will be held in Jim’s hometown of Selma on January 11 at 2 pm.

Praying with Our Community

We remember and pray for:

  • Laura Crook, the wife of Joe Crook and sister-in-law of James Crook, who was hospitalized with pneumonia.

  • Peggy Korte’s husband, Chuck Korte, who has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

  • Elena Ceberio, who suffered a concussion and a broken hand due to a fall.

  • Mary Wayne Watson, who was hospitalized with an infection.

  • Elmer Johnson, who is in the health center at Springmoor after a hospitalization.

  • James Crook, who was hospitalized with the flu.

  • Pat Long and Jeanne Kauss, who are both ill.

  • Baxter Wells, who had a spot removed from his colon.

  • Brian Herring, who has a cancerous tumor on his esophagus that has metastasized. As a result, he has difficulty breathing and swallowing. Brian is at Duke Raleigh Hospital awaiting the start of treatment.

  • Michael Watkins, who is continuing cancer treatment. At Michael’s last check-up, the doctors reported a decline in tumor markers. He has begun his first high-dose chemo treatments.
