Joys and Concerns in January

Celebrating Joys

  • Nghia Gurganus recently earned the designation of Eagle Scout! His Eagle Scout ceremony was held at Pullen on January 4.

  • Abby Sandling’s granddaughter, Claire Thomas Hixson, was born on January 5 to parents Julia and Todd. Julia and Todd’s journey to parenthood spanned over 12 years with three surgeries and multiple IVF cycles. We are delighted to share this joy with them!

Praying in Loss

We remember and pray for:

  • Ju Kim in the loss of his father, Jong-Ok Kim. Ju traveled to Korea for his father’s services and has returned to NC.

  • Roger Atkins in the loss of his partner Brian Herring, who passed away on January 7 at the age of 61. Brian died just a few weeks after a cancer diagnosis. Brian’s service will be held at Pullen on February 14 at 10 am.

  • Bill and Jan Crouch in the death of Bill’s sister, Rebecca Hobbs, who passed away on December 31 in Milledgeville, Georgia.

  • Peggy Korte in the loss of her husband, Chuck Korte, who passed away on January 11 from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Chuck’s service was held on January 31 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Raleigh.

  • The Ravenscroft community and all who mourn the loss of Ravenscroft teacher Zoe Welsh, who was killed in her home near Fletcher Park.

Praying with Our Community

We remember and pray for:

  • Pam Knight, who has dealt with multiple illnesses, including the flu and pneumonia.

  • James Crook, who is dealing with an undetermined illness.

  • Ginny Going, who is dealing with undetermined GI problems.

  • Norma Merrimon, who is recovering from COVID.

  • Carolyn Miller Sexton, whose brother Walter “Kent” Miller has pancreatic cancer. Over the past few weeks, he has been unable to tolerate solid food and is declining. We pray for Kent and his siblings, Carolyn and Wendy.

  • Carol Majors, who had a TIA (mini-stroke) while visiting her family in England. Although her return trip was delayed, Carol is now home and doing well.

  • Michael Watkins and Shannon Ball. Michael completed his second round of high-dose chemo and stem cell transplant. All of his tumor markers have dropped to within or below the normal range! We continue to pray for him as he recovers and prepares for his final round of chemo.

  • The families of the residents of Chatham Estates mobile home park in Cary. The property was sold, and families were notified just after Christmas that they had six months to find housing. We’ve known this was coming, and as members of ONE Wake, we were able to secure money for residents’ moving expenses. But this does little to help the reality of their displacement in a market with an extreme deficit of affordable housing.

Praying for Our World

We remember those who have lost their lives at the hands of federal agents in recent weeks. We pray for the people of Minneapolis and those across the country who are working hard to protect their neighbors and our constitutional rights.
