Case Statement for 2025 Capital Campaign
Pullen Memorial Baptist Church is a unique place. As one of the most progressive Baptist churches in the nation, if not the world, we are open and welcoming to people from all walks of life. We stand against racism. We fight injustice and poverty. We care for those who are hungry and mistreated and without housing. We nurture the environment. We build relationships with congregations in other countries and other faiths that enrich our lives tremendously.
It is a legacy worthy of preservation and expansion.
The Capital Campaign Committee has developed strategies to ensure the long-term financial health of the church and help fulfill its ongoing mission of being a people dedicated to making a difference in the world.
A feasibility study conducted in June and July 2024 by Dr. Lennie Barton included interviews with 55 Pullenites who indicated strong support for a capital campaign aimed at eliminating Pullen’s debt and providing care for its buildings.
We are moving forward with a capital campaign to raise at least $1.5 million over the next three years. The money would be used for maintenance and repairs to our buildings and to eliminate the debt on the Cox Avenue Building.
Debt: With a legacy gift left to us from a Pullenite, we have been able to pay off the mortgage on the 1801 Hillsborough building and a line of credit we had used for repairs over the last few years. Pullen’s debt currently totals $595,000, which is essentially the mortgage for the Cox Avenue building.
Maintenance/Repairs: Our original building is 100 years old. Maintenance and repairs are a constant challenge. Our building is not only our house of worship, it also provides space for nurturing and educating our children, for feeding and offering hospitality to those in need, and for community groups whose missions align with ours.
This capital campaign will retire the debt we currently have, and mostly focus on immediate repairs needed for our building. We also envision the possibility of establishing an endowment for future maintenance/repair needs if we have sufficient funds.
Some examples of what our buildings need (exact costs cannot be determined until these projects get underway, but we estimate they will total about $900,000):
· Waterproofing
· Restoration of Siler Garden
· Drainspout rerouting
· Boiler repairs
· Continued air quality/mold remediation efforts
