Wiley Elementary Reading Partner Program Update
The Wiley Elementary Reading Partner Program continues to thrive with the support of Pullen! Twenty-nine volunteers from Pullen and the community were matched for 20-minute one-on-one reading sessions with 40 students. Reading tutors came once a week and worked with two to three students back-to-back. Students received this support twice a week from two different tutors.
During each session, students worked on reading fluency and building their vocabulary. The end-of-year results of the program were impressive. Students increased the number of words read per minute by an average of 57 words over the year. They increased their reading accuracy rate to 99% by the end of the year. Students also reported improvements in reading confidence and truly enjoyed the connections made with their reading tutors.
Students shared their enthusiasm for the program:
“My reading partner helped my reading scores go up, up, up!”
“I loved spending time with my reading partners. It was so much fun.”
“They are so nice and helped me with learning lots of new words.”
“They helped my brain grow bigger and bigger!”
We wish to thank Pullen for funding reading materials this year, including joke books that students took home to read over the summer.
Special thanks to Kathy Foglia, Wiley Literacy Specialist and Reading Partners Coordinator, and our Pullen tutors: Jeff Bond, Steve Braun, Emily Cato, Drew Foglia, Milena Foglia, Lynn Jarrard, Amy Marschall, Nadine Martin, Mary Moore, and Judy Williams.
