Adult Sunday School Classes         2007-08

Care of Creation Class

Room 309

This class studies books where Christianity/Judaism/Islam and other religions intersect with science.  Many individual members are active in policy advocacy, but the class purpose is to find our individual sources of insight and renewal.  Our class leadership will rotate among the members this year. Two strong candidates for books to study are 1) the most recent edition of The Ecozoic Reader with contributions from class members and 2) Roger Gottlieb's A Greener Faith: Religious Environmentalism and Our Planet's Future. The class will also consider other suggestions and decide which books to study.

Facilitator: Dan Figgins (851-9975)

Discoverers Class

Room 312

During the 2006-07 year, the Discoverers Class used the DVD Living the Questions as the basis for Bible study, historical review, and discussion, with input from such well-known theologians as Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, Nancy Ammerman, John Cobb, John Shelby Spong, and others. This year we will move to another DVD, Saving Jesus, which features all of the above-mentioned, along with Jim Forbes, Matthew Fox, Amy-Jill Levine, Helen Prejean, and Walter Brueggemann. Some of the topics in this new series are: Who was Jesus? What can we know about Jesus (and how)? Jesus’ program—the Kingdom of God. Class members will help with facilitation. Discussions are lively, fun, and thoughtful.  All are welcome.

Facilitator: Suzanne Newton (851-4710)

Grope Group

Room 114

The Grope Group adult Sunday school class cherishes a tradition of intellectual curiosity, tolerance for diverse views, and a caring sharing of experiences and insights. Through group discussions of philosophical, psychological, theological, spiritual, social, and political issues and concerns, the class focuses on learning and personal growth. Various class members and occasional guests facilitate discussions. The focus of this Sunday school year will be on “Morals and Ethics.” Discussions will be based primarily on short stories by noted authors such as William Faulkner, Rudyard Kipling, D.H.
Lawrence, and Anton Chekhov, and on the Dalai Lama’s Ethics For The New Millennium.

Facilitators: Lamarr and Julie Cox (782-5558; jlamarrcox@aol.com)

Pullen 101

Church parlor, 2nd floor

Pullen 101 is an eight-week contract class designed to introduce new persons to Pullen and our ministry and mission. Topics include our identity, history, theology, worship, Baptist identity, structure, missions, and education. In each session, church members share memorable Pullen stories and explain why they are at Pullen. Information about how our church functions in its various ministry areas is also included. The class provides an opportunity to get to know Pullen people and staff. The fall 2007 series begins on September 23 and ends on November 11. The spring 2008 series runs from January 20 to March 9.

McMillan Class

Room 212, west alcove next to sanctuary

In 2007-08, the McMillan Class will consider “Dreams, Visions and Theophanies of the Bible” which played roles in the development of the Hebrew people and their Christian successors. Class members will assist Robert McMillan in providing leadership for the group and in offering their insights as we explore this topic together.

Facilitator: Robert McMillan (834-5369)

Poteat Class

Room 311

Lead teacher Steve Holland will discuss the major ideas, personalities, and events associated with the Protestant Reformation. Mike Watts will also teach and discuss some of the Great Texts and some of the Problematic Texts of the bible. Class members will also provide leadership for the discussion of Great or Problematic texts. There will be no prior preparation or prerequisite classes required, so that visitors can drop in and feel right at home, and not feel lost because they missed last week. Of course, if we don't finish in one hour, sometimes we will pick up where we left off, but we don't anticipate that being a regular thing.

Facilitators: Mike Watts (934-5905 )

and Steve Holland (550-9526)

Reclaimers Class

Room 314, alcove next to west balcony

This class explores challenging questions about our faith. In September we will begin with a three-part series led by Jack McKinney on what it means to be Baptist. Then for three weeks in October, Jane Gurry, retired Episcopal priest, will help us explore how to read the bible in this complex age. The class will then determine the topics to follow based on the interests of our members.

Wednesday Nights

Wednesday night is a busy time for the Pullen family.  We begin  at 5:30 p.m. with a meal that provides valuable space to visit with fellow Pullenites.  We share announcements of upcoming events within our church and community followed by the naming of prayer concerns.  At 6:30 p.m., adults can choose from several program offerings that conclude at 7:30 p.m. as the children’s programming ends.  The program topics vary, and typically include bible study, presentations on social justice issues, aspects of theology or spirituality, matters of concern to our church family, reports from our international pilgrims, and activities offered for fun and self-improvement. The fall season concludes with our annual Lovefeast on December 19.

Wednesday Nights for 2007-08 begin on September 12 and end on May 21. There are no activities on November 21, when we join with other West Raleigh churches for a Thanksgiving service, and on March 19, the day before our Maundy Thursday service. The cost of dinner is $4.00 for youth and adults, $2.00 for children age K through fifth grade, and free for college students. Meal reservations are not required.

Other Adult Opportunities

Meditation Room

Room 301, next to east side balcony

For those who need a quiet space on Sunday mornings, our Meditation Room is open to all for contemplation and prayer on a come and go basis.

Young Adults

The Young Adult Program is a place for young people from ages 18 to 30. We are in college, graduate school, and in the working world. While we do not have a Sunday morning class this fall, we invite you to attend one of the adult offerings.  Instead we will meet regularly on Sunday evenings at the church for bible study, and on other occasions for fun. If you think this might be a group for you, you can meet us on Sunday nights. All young adults are welcome!

Facilitator: Jack McKinney (828-0897, x213)

Bible Study

Bible study is an important component of Pullen’s adult education programming. In addition to Sunday school classes, some of our Wednesday night programs provide an opportunity to explore our sacred scriptures.

Pullen Library

The Azelene Medlin Memorial Library is a resource for all ages.  It contains many recent books, reference materials, periodicals, and videos on a variety of topics of interest to the Pullen family.  The library is open whenever the church building is open and self-help check-out makes it easy to get what you need when you need it.  If you cannot find what you are looking for, librarian Marilyn Brandt and the Library Committee are always open to adding new resources to the Pullen library’s fine collection.
