Members of the Pullen community are engaged in a variety of local ministries through the church, through the Hope Center at Pullen, and as individual volunteers at agencies in Raleigh and Wake County. During 2008-2009, the church is the recipient of funds from a City of Raleigh Community Enhancement Grant that supports the Wiley-Pullen Partnership and a Job Readiness Project.

Back Door Ministry

For an hour on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Pullenites distribute snack lunches and local bus tickets to an average of 75 homeless and low income residents of Raleigh. Donations of lunch items and funds for bus tickets are always needed. New volunteers and lunch packers are welcome as well.

Congregations for Social Justice (CSJ)

Pullen is an active member of this new multi-faith, multi-racial coalition of local faith communities working in solidarity to create a better Raleigh by affecting public policy that benefits all people. Several Pullen members and staff participate with CSJ’s steering committee or task groups addressing affordable housing and community corrections. Periodically, Pullen people attend Raleigh City Council or other meetings to show support for policies related to these two issues.

Micah Projects

Micah Projects are short-term, hands-on mission projects scheduled periodically on Saturdays and open to all ages. They provide opportunities for people to do justice and kindness, connecting this work to our walk with God. Details about Micah Projects are provided in the PullenNews and Sunday Update.

Refugee Resettlement

Pullen members resettled three refugee families from Cuba, Iraq, and Vietnam in 2005-06. The Cuban family, former members of our partner church in Matanzas, Cuba, moved to Miami to be near family in 2008. Pullen volunteers continue to support the Montagnard (Vietnamese) and Iraqi families with friendship, transportation, tutoring, and other forms of assistance. New volunteers are always welcome.

Community Enhancement Grant Projects

Pullen received a Community Enhancement Grant from the City of Raleigh for 2008-09 to expand two of our existing community ministries. Through the grant, our tutoring program with Wiley Elementary School students was enhanced, and a Job Readiness program was created for some of the participants in our Back Door Ministry. As of July 2009, these programs are under the auspices of The Hope Center at Pullen, a non-profit entity.

Missions and Outreach Council Grants

In addition to our involvement in hands-on ministries, Pullen also supports missions through Support and Major Grants to nonprofit organizations. As part of our annual operating budget, Pullen gives grants to local, regional, and international organizations and ministries that respond to God’s call to “do justice and to love kindness.” Grant recipients are selected by the Missions and Outreach Council from applications submitted by Pullen people. Small support grants are awarded to organizations with which Pullenites are actively involved as staff, volunteers, or regular contributors. Larger major grants fund our international partnerships as well as significant projects of local organizations, also requested by Pullen people. The 2009 church budget includes 37 support grants and 11 major grants. For a grant application for the upcoming year, click here.
