The Pullen Music Ministry excitedly announces that its first Church Music Search was launched on April 15, 2014! This annual search will invite authors and composers from around the world to create congregational hymns, choral anthems and orchestral music that engage and exclaim liberal Christian theology and associated themes.
Connecting to Pullen’s new Vision Plan, this annual project will help achieve the Plan’s “Arts and Faith” goal as the search results in resourcing Pullen and other theologically-liberal congregations with meaningful and artistic church music.
The Search also helps fulfill the Vision Plan’s “Presenting Ourselves to the World” goal as it is advertised internationally. Supportive responses to news of the Search have already been received from across the United States, from New Zealand and England, from professional and amateur composers and authors, from church musician networks in the United Church of Christ and Unitarian Universalist Association, from personnel in organizations such as The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, The Alliance of Baptists, The Hymn Society in Great Britain and Ireland, the American Composers Forum, and from ProgressiveChristianity.org that is currently including information about the Search on it’s homepage.
In celebration of Pullen’s Chancel Choir, the 2015 Search is for a choral anthem that expresses the meaning and celebration of Easter from a theologically-liberal viewpoint. The creator(s) of the winning anthem will receive an award of $1,500. The Search’s winning selection and honorable mention will be premiered and celebrated in Pullen worship services after the conclusion of the 2015 Search.
Complete information and submission guidelines for the Church Music Search are found at: www.pullen.org/musicsearch. Pullenites are encouraged to use the information and advertising materials found on the web page to help spread the word about the Search.
Theologically-liberal congregations like Pullen have transformative things to proclaim! It is our prayer that all who hear about, create, sing and publish as a result of this Church Music Search will be blessed in transformative ways.
