Pullen Memorial Baptist Church

Inclement Weather Guidelines

These guidelines cover cases of inclement weather and other situations (power outages, building damage, etc.) that may make it unsafe to conduct normal church services, church meetings, or other church business.

  • In cases of severe weather or other crises, the pastors may elect to cancel Sunday or Wednesday night activities or other weekday events.  The pastors will seek the input of the church staff before a final decision is made concerning canceling services or programs.  Once a decision has been made, staff members will be informed along supervisory lines.  If possible, the decision about canceling Wednesday night programs will be made by 2:00 P.M. on that day.  For weekday activities, actions taken by the Wake County School Board regarding school closings will be used as a guide.
  • Every effort must be made to communicate cancellations of Sunday or Wednesday night activities with the congregation.  Information concerning such cancellations will be posted with local news media (television and radio stations).  Cancellation information will also be recorded on the church answering machine (828-0897).  When appropriate, telephone calls will be used to inform interested parties.  An effort will be made to secure the cell phone numbers of church members to be used by the staff only in emergency situations when regular phone service is not available.
  • When a decision is made to cancel Sunday or Wednesday activities or to close the church office due to inclement weather, all committee, council, and other group meetings occurring on that day will be cancelled – no exceptions.  There is some inconvenience when groups must reschedule meetings because of weather events.  However, confusion sets in when a decision is made to cancel services/programs and then groups make exceptions to that decision.  In addition, groups that decide to go ahead with their meetings run the risk of excluding members who feel they cannot come because of safety concerns.
  • In rare cases, worship services will be held even when all other events and meetings have been cancelled (e.g., in the aftermath of a hurricane or other devastating events when people need to gather for worship, but not for a committee meeting).
  • In cases of inclement weather during regular office hours, Pullen staff will follow direction of the pastors regarding possible closing of the church office.  Actions taken by the Wake County School Board regarding school closings will be used as a guide.  All staff absences due to inclement weather will be accounted for as per the Pullen Personnel Policies.
