The sounds of school bells are already piercing the morning air following a summer hiatus. The end of summer break means it is time to for another exciting year of the Wiley-Pullen Tutoring Partnership!
This fall we will welcome students and alumni from Wiley International Magnet Elementary School to our church for weekly tutoring sessions and meals. We hope to welcome 15 students into our program this year, but we need your help to move forward! The number of student slots available depends on the number of tutors we have committed, and we still need about five more tutors, plus a few substitutes. Personal attention is an important element of this program, so we try to pair students with tutors for one-on-one sessions as much as possible.
Wiley students walk as a group to Pullen to play games, eat a snack, receive help with their homework, and practice reading on Wednesdays beginning at 3:45 pm. In addition to these activities, the tutoring ministry creates an atmosphere of trust, safety, and care for the children involved. Students continue coming to Pullen because they know they are loved, they are valued, and they are a part of a community of people who care about their wellbeing – intangible elements of this ministry that are just as important to the future success of these young students as the academic assistance they receive from tutors.
The tutoring year runs from late September to mid May. Tutors are needed from 4:15 to 5:30 pm. Those who can come early are invited to meet us at Wiley by 3:45 to help chaperone the walk, and tutors are always invited to stay and eat with their students after the tutoring hour. As you make plans for the fall, consider giving one hour a week to mentoring a child through the Wiley-Pullen Tutoring Partnership. No special skills or prior experience is needed – only a desire to care for a child. If you are interested in serving as a weekly tutor, an occasional substitute tutor, or a field-trip chaperone, contact David Anderson at email@example.com or at 919-443-0186.
Walk with Students from Wiley to Pullen:
This year we are committed to Going the Distance with our Wiley students. Increasing physical activity with the theme of Going the Distance is a new emphasis at Wiley. Students participating in our Wiley-Pullen Tutoring Ministry will be walking 6/10s of a mile from Wiley to Pullen, rain or shine, as one example of integrating fitness into daily life. Donations of umbrellas, ponchos and pull over sweat-shirts for inclement weather days are welcome. In addition to incorporating a healthy activity into the day, the walk provides a nice transition for the students and helps them arrive at Pullen with a bit more focus for tutoring.
Chaperones are needed to help keep our students safe and motivated during the walk. If you are interested in meeting our group at Wiley by 3:45 PM on Wednesdays and serving as a chaperone for our walk, please contact David Anderson at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 919-443-0186. You may serve as a walking chaperone and stay for tutoring, or just walk with us for 10-15 minutes and bid us adieu. Your support and participation is what makes this ministry possible.
