What shall we choose as the symbols we use,
So all men may know the sign that we show
Who we are?
We shall use stables and mangers and angels;
The wisemen, the crown and dark Bethlehem town,
And the star.
But what do these prove, I ask? What do they mean?
For all men can hang these and let them be seen!
Since this is Christ’s birthday, what sign did he say
That we should convey or should have on display,
Or be worn?
By this you shall show, yes, by this they shall know:
“As I have loved you, so shall you love them, too,
And be one.”
