Tutors Needed on Wednesday Afternoons
The clang of school bells will soon be piercing the morning air following a summer hiatus. Students may have mixed feelings about the start of a new school year, but one thing is certain to bring excitement for all involved: The Wiley-Pullen Tutoring Partnership!
This fall we will welcome students and alumni from Wiley International Magnet Elementary School to our church for weekly tutoring sessions and meals. Last year, 18 students participated in this important ministry of our church. This year, the number of student slots available depends on you! Personal attention is an important element of this program, so we try to pair students with tutors for one-on-one sessions as much as possible.
Wiley students come to Pullen to play games, eat a snack, receive help with their homework, and practice reading on Wednesdays beginning at 4:00 PM. In addition to these activities, the tutoring ministry creates an atmosphere of trust, safety, and care for the children involved. Students continue coming to Pullen because they know they are loved, they are valued, and they are a part of a community of people who care about their wellbeing – intangible elements of this ministry that are just as important to the future success of these young students as the academic assistance they receive from tutors.
Last year students also participated in two fun Saturday field trips to the newly-expanded N.C. Museum of Natural Science and to Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve. Four half-day field trips are being planned for the current year to give students additional opportunities to expand their horizons.
The tutoring year runs from October to May. As you make plans for the fall, consider giving one hour a week to mentoring a child through the Wiley-Pullen Tutoring Partnership. No special skills or prior experience is needed – only a desire to care for a child.
